OPINION: Rep. Ryan's budget plan is a "Path to the Poorhouse" #p2 #tcot

If Americans who are embracing Rep. Paul Ryan's "Path to Prosperity" — and that now includes Mitt Romney — spent a few minutes reviewing a few recent research reports, they just might conclude that the Wisconsin Republican's plan to reduce the deficit might better be renamed the "Path to the Poorhouse" because of what it would mean to the Medicare program and many senior citizens.

Ryan's proposal, which will get new scrutiny now that Romney has made him his running mate, would end the current Medicare program for everyone born after 1956. It would replace Medicare with a system in which beneficiaries would receive a set amount of money from the government every year to buy coverage from private insurers. That money would go straight into insurance companies' bank accounts, which would make them far richer and even more in control of our health care system than they already are.

While the amount of money beneficiaries would receive would depend on their health status, the average 65-year-old would get $8,000 under the Ryan plan in 2022, the year it would take effect. That's the amount the current Medicare program is expected to spend on the average 65-year-old that year. After 2022, the annual increase in the "premium support" payments would be based on the consumer price index (CPI). And therein lies one of the biggest problems for anyone hoping to live long enough to enroll in Medicare and stay alive for a few years.

Last month the government reported that the consumer price index had increased 1.7 percent between June 2011 and June 2012, meaning we've been paying on average 1.7 percent more this year than last year for goods and services. The cost of medical care, however, shot up 4.3 percent — more than two and a half times the CPI. And that was not an aberration. The cost of medical care has been rising faster than the cost of just about everything else in this country for years. That's one of the reasons why private health insurance premiums have been increasing so rapidly. That and the fact that insurance corporations have to report a big enough profit every quarter to satisfy their shareholders and Wall Street analysts.

Health insurance premiums rose 9 percent in 2011 to an average of $15,073 for an employer-subsidized family plan, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Over the past 10 years, premiums have increased a "whopping" (Kaiser's word) 113 percent, much faster than wage increases and general inflation. So you can see what almost certainly would happen to Medicare beneficiaries beginning in 2022: They would have to shell out more and more money out of their own pockets every year just to cover the premiums their private insurers would charge them.

America’s Ten Largest Corporations Paid Nine Percent Average Tax Rate Last Year #p2 #tcot

America's 10 most profitable corporations paid an average corporate income tax rate of just 9 percent in 2011, according to a study from financial site NerdWallet reported by the Huffington Post. The 10 companies include Wall Street banks like Wells Fargo and JP Morgan Chase, oil companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron, and tech companies like Apple, IBM, and Microsoft.

The two companies with the lowest tax rates were both oil companies. ExxonMobil paid $1.5 billion in taxes on $73.3 billion in earnings, a tax rate of 2 percent. Chevron's tax rate was just 4 percent. None of the companies paid anywhere near the 35 percent top corporate tax rate, providing more evidence to debunk claims that America's corporate tax rate is stunting economic growth and job creation (Despite the high marginal rate, American corporations pay one of the lowest effective corporate tax rates in the world).

In what may be the first time a sitting president has been blamed for bad weather, House Speaker John Boehner's office said that President Obama needs to take responsibility for the drought in the Midwest, reports TalkingPointsmemo.com.

On Speaker Boehner's web site and in an email pres release, he states that President Obama "continues to blame anyone and everyone for the drought but himself."

The Financial Times attributed the bizarre quote to Boehner, while the web site posting and the email press release was attributed to Boehner spokesperson Kevin Smith.

After TalkingPointsMemo.com reported this story originally, Boehner's website was changed, which TalkingPointsMemo.com reported as well:

UPDATED @ 4:30 PM ET:

Clarifies that the president is blaming others for failing to respond to the drought when he has yet to urge Senate Democrats to adopt a bipartisan drought-relief measure passed by the House.

According to the Washington Post, the Obama White House announced $170 million in federal assistance to help farmer's suffering from the drought.

Samuel 'Joe the Plumber' Wurzelbacher, who is running for Congress in Ohio, said recently that the U.S. should "put a damn fence on the border going to Mexico and start shooting" (video below).

Wurzelbacher made the statement during a rally for Arizona Republican state Rep. Lori Klein on Friday, according to Prescott eNews.

Wurzelbacher said: "For years I've said, you know, put a damn fence on the border, going to Mexico, and start shooting."

Appearing with Klein on Saturday, Wurzelbacher said: "I'm running for Congress. How many congressmen or people running for Congress have you heard, put a fence up and start shooting? None? Well you heard it here first. Put troops on the border and start shooting, I bet that solves our immigration problem real quick."

Klein refused to condemn the call for border shooting, but her opponent Republican state House Speaker Andy Tobin told KTVK-TV:  "I would ask for him to retract the statement as made in jest, and if not made in jest, I'm appalled at him. We don't do that in Arizona."

In Maywood, Illinois, an unnamed police officer, who was off-duty, accidentally struck 4-year-old Taniyah Middleton with his motorcycle and then shot and killed the girl's father, Christopher Middleton (pictured).

When Taniyah Middleton ran in the way of the officer's path, he ditched his bike, but it still hit the little girl, on Saturday night (video below).

The officer tried to help the girl and that's when her father, Christopher Middleton, rushed out of a nearby restaurant, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Christopher Middleton punched the officer, who had identified himself. The girl's 18-year-old cousin John Passley then joined in on the beating.

The police officer then fired his gun at Middleton, who died later that night.

Middleton's cousin, Mathis Hoskin told the Chicago Sun-Times: "Chris was a great father. He was always helpful, never mad, always happy with a smile on his face."

Taniyah Middleton was treated at a local hospital for injuries. The police officer had broken bones from the motorcycle accident and injuries from the beating.
